ammo question for moss and winchester

okay I have a moss 12 gauge and a winch 264 rifle.

What ammo should I use.

The 12 gauge shells I have seen come in different sizes...does it matter which size I use?

What shells should I use for the winchester riffle?

Thanks

We will need a little more info on the Mossy to help.

There are 2.75", 3" and 3" magnums for the 12 gauge. And YES, it does matter. A shotgun that can shoot a 3" shell can also shoot the 2 3/4" shell. But NOT the other way around. You can blow up the shotgun by shooting the wrong sized shell in it.

The Winchester SHOULD BE a Model 70 in .264 Magnum. But again, MORE INFO will be a great help.

Let us know and we can give more specific info.

winchester model 70 264 win mag

Moss maverick model 88 12 gauge...

What more info? How can I Find out. I really don't want to take it anywhere, although the winchester I can get a hold of the previous owner, the moss I've had for a few years and doubt the origenal owner would remember, plus I don't know if I can find him. He went to FLA about 6 years ago!

Re: ammo question for moss and winchester

A couple of things: 12-gauge ammo is commonly available in three lengths, 2.75", 3", and 3.5". 2.5" shells still exist but are fairly uncommon. You need to insure your barrel and your receiver are capable of handling a size. For example, if your gun is all original, the barrel should have a marking that says what shells it can fire. If it says you can fire a 3", you can also fire any of the shorter rounds.

Do NOT attempt to see if a round will chamber to determine if it is suitable. A 3" shell will chamber just fine in a shotgun with a 2-3/4" chamber. Firing it will result in dangerously high pressure as the chamber is too short for the opened shell. The shell length refers to the length with the shell opened, not crimped.

If you have an 870 with a barrel that is not original, you need to refer to the serial number. If it has an "M" at the end, it is capable of firing a 3" shell. If it does not, it is a 2-3/4" receiver. The difference is the location of the ejector which is riveted to the receiver.

Magnums in shot shells do not refer to increased velocity; they refer to more shot in the load. Magnum shotshells often exhibit slower velocities because they accelerate more payload. This is confusing because Remington refers to three-inch chambers as Magnums and 3.5" chambers as Super Magnums for guns, but the magnum definition for shotshells themselves is increased shot weight.

Your rifle should be able to handle any .264 Winchester Magnum load that is available.

Thanks, he said 264 win is all I needed to know for the rifle, and he said the same about the moss.
